The Ukraine Peace Summit
An Exercise in Futility
Yes, it is time to pull this summit apart. Sadly - for Switzerland in particular - it was not a neutral mediation aiming at getting closer to a rational peace-making process.
Paradoxically, President Putin has advanced negotiation proposals concerning Ukraine 5 times and the West never took him on his words. (See Jeffrey Sachs' article on The Transnational - https://transnational.live)
The reason? It was never about Ukraine as such; it was about weakening and perhaps splitting up Russia - a sick neo-con idea.

On 18 June 2024, I participated in a discussion at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft on the recent Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland. Anatol Lieven was the moderator and the other two members of the panel were Anne Kraatz and Daniel Larison. We not only discussed why the summit was a failure, but also where the Ukraine war is headed.
