Johan Galtung – my dear mentor, colleague, TFF Associate and friend over 50 years – died on February 17, this year in Norway, his native country.
Sadly, he did not die in a way he – or anybody else for that matter – should have a right to in a humane welfare state, i.e. with the best treatment and with dignity.
Over an extended period of time, his daughter, Irene, cared lovingly day and night for him until he was taken away from her home and care against his expressed will. She was met by systematic and difficult obstacles from her surroundings.
The fact is that she paid more than money for her noble efforts, and she is now burdened with large lawyer fees she cannot pay.
Dag Poleszynski in Oslo is a friend and former peace researcher whom I have known for as long as I knew Johan. He, too, was a friend of Johan for 50 years and followed his struggles to the very end, something I did not do as I live far away. Dag and I have decided to help Irene raise money to pay her debts and regain some security in her life.
Irene went broke helping Johan, using up all her savings on him, paying for his pharmacy supplies, housing, transportation, medicine, food, etc.
This is all explained in the text that introduces this appeal on GoFundMe.
Click on the link, read the heartbreaking report about Johan’s last days and – please – do a good deed today in his honour and to appreciate Irene’s remarkable efforts.

From the Norwegian Helsemagasinet’s editor-in-chief, Dag Poleszynski:
“On 20 September 2023, I helped Irene Galtung, daughter of Johan Galtung, to bring him back to Norway from his home in Alfaz del Pi, Alicante. He travelled at his own request and stayed with Irene, who quickly arranged home help and gave him daily food, drink and care.
He thrived with Irene and stayed with her for four months before he was taken from her against his will. Irene and Johan were strongly opposed by family members.
Jan Øberg and I made this urgent appeal to his friends, former colleagues and online and online followers to help Irene financially. In this connection, Jan Øberg published the following text on his website on 17 May. (1) We hope that more people will help Irene so she can have her expenses covered in connection with her care for her beloved father over many years, especially the last five months of his life.”
